Stop-Start AGM/EFB Guide

SUNCOAST BATTERIES & SOLAR

Find the right battery for your stop-start.

Start with your vehicle specification, then compare suitable options. Battery technology, fit and any setup after fitting all matter.

EFB or AGM? Follow the vehicle specification.

EFB

Enhanced Flooded Battery

A lead-acid technology designed for more demanding duties, including suitable stop-start applications.

AGM

Absorbent Glass Mat

A lead-acid technology that holds electrolyte in a glass-mat separator. An AGM-specified vehicle should retain AGM.

These technologies are not automatically interchangeable. A battery that fits the tray can still be the wrong replacement.

Three steps to a better match

  1. 1. Check fitment

Start with the finder and your vehicle details. Mention stop-start and electrical modifications.

  2. 2. Choose the specification

Confirm technology, dimensions, terminal layout and required ratings before selecting a model.

  3. 3. Confirm your quote

Check the total price, delivery, fitting and any vehicle-specific setup before booking.

Why stop-start needs the correct technology

Stop-start vehicles ask the battery to support repeated engine restarts and electrical loads while the engine is stopped. EFB and AGM technologies are designed for these more demanding duties. A conventional starter battery is not a suitable shortcut simply because it fits the tray.

Both EFB and AGM are lead-acid technologies, but their role depends on the vehicleโ€™s electrical and charging systems. A vehicle specified for AGM should retain AGM. An EFB-to-AGM change may be suitable in some applications, but it needs a compatibility check rather than an assumption.

Disabling the stop-start button does not change the original battery specification.

What to check beyond the battery label

Send your vehicle details as well as the battery label. The currently fitted battery may not be the original or correct model.

A proper match considers the manufacturer application, dimensions, terminal layout, mounting arrangement and required ratings. Please leave difficult-to-access batteries in place; a photo is helpful only when safely accessible.

Does the vehicle need registration or a reset?

Some vehicles need the replacement battery registered or initialised in their battery management system. This depends on the vehicle.

Ask before booking whether your car needs that work and whether it can be included in the proposed service. Do not assume that a battery delivery includes diagnostic programming.

What to send with your enquiry

A complete enquiry helps us confirm available options without guessing. Include:

  • Registration and state, or make, model, year and engine.
  • Whether the vehicle has stop-start.
  • Existing battery model or a safe-to-take label photo.
  • Your suburb and where the vehicle is parked.
  • Any warning messages or repeated starting problems.

Mention recent battery replacement, charging problems or electrical modifications too.

Common questions

Is a higher CCA number enough to choose a replacement?

No. Starting performance is one part of the specification. The correct technology, fit, capacity requirements and vehicle compatibility still matter.

Can you tell which battery I need from โ€œAGMโ€ alone?

No. AGM identifies a technology, not one universal size or application. Send the complete battery model and vehicle details.

Does a stop-start system that stops working prove the battery is faulty?

No. The vehicle can inhibit stop-start for several operating reasons. Report the symptoms and warning messages so the next check can be agreed.
